Hours before 60 Minutes was set to air an investigation into the Trump administration sending deportees to brutal prison conditions in El Salvador, CBS pulled the segment. The reason? Bari Weiss, who has spent her short career on the opinion side only, and before that was a college kid trying to get Palestinian teachers fired, pulled rank — just as CBS’ parent company was amending its bid to take over Warner Brothers and CNN, a deal that would require Trump administration approval.
Sharyn Alfonsi, the 60 Minutes correspondent who reported the story, sent an internal email making it clear: Bari Weiss spiked the story. The piece reportedly had been screened five times, cleared by CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices, and was “factually correct.”
This is what happens when billionaires buy journalism and put propagandists in charge: honest reporting gets killed to appease those in power.
